Ever wondered what some of those information labels and window stickers around the vehicle say? Here we provide important information in addition to clarifying what some of the more obscure stickers mean.
Vehicle Inspection

All vehicles with prefectural license plates must display valid vehicle inspection (shaken) stickers. Up to 2004 (Heisei 16) these stickers rotated on a four-year colour cycle and do not display the date, but rather, the month of expiry. For example, a blue sticker expired in 1991, 1995, 1999 and 2003.

In 2004 new stickers were introduced that clearly show the date. This example shows 2010 (Heisei 22) year, April 4 month. Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism
Road Tax

The round stickers you see on the windscreen, usually in the upper left corner, are there to show the road tax has been paid. The numeral in the centre is the Heisei year of expiry (13 = 2001, etc.) The colours match those of the inspection stickers.
Parking Permit

This is a Parking Certificate "Shako shomei" which is issued by the local police.
Japanese law requires motorists to prove they have access to a local parking space. To register a car, or when changing address, motorists need to obtain a "parking space certificate" ("garage certificate" or "Shako shomei sho") from local police.
The picture shows Certificate No 040026930. In Hyogo pref. Kobe city and issued by Higashinada Chief Constable.
